Every elevator needs a code data plate. ASME A17.1 Section 8.9 requires one on each unit, in plain view at the main line disconnect or controller, showing the code edition in effect when the elevator was installed and the code in effect at each alteration — and it has to stay legible for the life of the equipment.

Common questions
What is an elevator code data plate?
A plate required by ASME A17.1 Section 8.9 on every elevator. It shows the code and edition in effect when the unit was installed, the code in effect at any alteration, and the applicable Section 8.7 requirements, so inspectors know which code to inspect and test against.
Where does the code data plate go?
In plain view, securely attached to each main line disconnect or controller. It may also be mounted inside the controller as long as it is in plain view with the controller door open.
Do I need a new plate after a modernization?
The plate has to show the code in effect at the time of any alteration and the Section 8.7 requirements that applied, so a modernization usually calls for a new or additional alteration plate. Our alteration plates are laid out for exactly that.
